This is probably Canon’s most versatile lens in their lineup. It takes 1:1 macros, great focal length for portraits and nice compact short tele. It prrobably one of if not the sharpest lenses. Beautiful color and nice bokeh… not as nice as teh 85L but pretty nice. It’s also a fraction of the price. The USM version really makes it usable for portraits and even some action shots. There is a delimiter switch that really speeds things up if you don’t need to go to 1:1.

One big surprise is how much I like this lens for portraits. It lets me get really close and play with some creative framing. When “The Shot” reality TV show was on, I noticed a lot of the fashion photographers choose the 100 macro as opposed to the 85L, 100 f/2 or 85 f/1.8. Interesting but I guess not that big of a surprise.

I just found out they call this lens the CanonBall. And it surely is. The thing is HEAVY, short and stout. It is a piece of light sucking engineering marvel. The pictures that come out of it are nothing like you have ever seen. Sharp where focused, silky smooth bokeh and beautiful colors. The only drawback is that it doesn’t fit in any of my camera bags! I have to constantly devise some form of carrying it.

If you are looking for the ultimate portrait lens or low light telephoto… this is it.

This is my second most used lens. Mainly because it is the small, light and convenient to take around. It also produces beautiful images. I had the 50mm f/1.2 L for a while and although I loved the build quality, the bokeh, and the colors… it certainly wasn’t worth $1000 more than this lens. Plus, I did experience its weird focus issues at close distances between f/2.0 and f/2.8.

The 50mm works well on a 1.3 crop for everyday shooting and can also serve as a portrait lens. With the 24L, it makes a great everyday combo. Throw in a 70-200L, and I have a travel kit.
